Maha Mudra –
This mudra is the most powerful mudra among all the mudras. That is why this mudra is called Mahamudra. Before practicing Mahamudra, it is necessary to have complete knowledge of all the methods of Shambhavi, Khechari, Mool Bandha, and Kumbha. Only then can Mahamudra be practiced properly. This mudra is most commonly used to reduce abdominal fat at a rapid pace.

Method of doing Maha Mudra –
First, know the first method of doing Mahamudra-
Mahamudra starting position – Uttan padasana –
- Spread your legs in front and sit in the starting position.
- Then keep the right leg stretched and bend the left knee and apply pressure on the Muladhara or vaginal root with the left heel.
- Keep both the hands above the knee.
- And while balancing your body, bring the body to the resting position.
- Now bend forward and hold the toe of the right foot with both hands.
- Stay comfortably in this position for as long as possible.
- Now come back to the sitting position and place both the hands on the right knee.
- In this way, a cycle of Mahamudra happened.
- And in the same way, do three cycles by folding the left leg and doing three cycles by folding the right leg.
- Finally, practice 3 rounds by spreading both legs.
Method of doing Maha Mudra –
- Sit in Uttan Padasana with the right leg extended in front.
- And keeping your back straight, relax the whole body.
- Now apply Khechari Mudra. And take a deep breath in.
- While exhaling, bend forward and hold the toe of the right foot with both hands.
- Keep your head and back straight. And then while tilting the head back a little, breathe slowly.
- Now apply Moolabandha while practicing Shambhavi Mudra.
- Holding the breath in, take the consciousness from the browbone to the Mooladhara through the groin.
- Similarly, revolving around the consciousness, mentally kept repeating Ajna, Vishuddhi, Up to Muladhara.
- Keep the concentration on each chakra only for a moment or two.
- And keep rotating the conscious as long as you can comfortably hold your breath.
- Now gradually remove Shavbhavi Mudra, then Moolabandha.
- Coming to an upright position, exhale slowly.
- In this way, one cycle of Mahamudra is completed.
- And in the same way, do three cycles by folding the left leg and doing three cycles by folding the right leg.
- Finally, practice 3 rounds by spreading both legs.
Maha Mudra Variation –
In this, instead of Uttan Padasana, Mahamudra is practiced by sitting in Siddhasana or Siddhayoni. And sitting in Siddhasana or Siddhayoni, keeping hands on knees in Gyan or Chin Mudra should be practiced in the above method. All you have to take care of is to do it without leaning forward.
Breathing while doing Mahamudra-
One cycle of Maha Mudra practice is equivalent to one complete inhalation and exhalation. The longer as well as you can hold your breath, the better. But the lungs should not be stressed too much. After a few months and years of practice, gradually the length of the breath should be increased.
Duration of doing Mahamudra –
In the beginning, three chakras should be practiced with left, right, and both legs. After a few months and years of practice, gradually the number of cycles can be increased to 12. At the end of each chakra when consciousness returns to Muladhara, keep counting the chakras mentally.
The sequence of doing Maha Mudra –
After doing Maha Mudra, you can do Mahabheda Mudra or Tadan Kriya.
Time to do Mahamudra-
The suitable time to practice Maha Mudra is early morning. And this can be done when the stomach is completely empty. This can be done even before the practice of meditation.
Limits of doing Mahamudra –
In the summer season, Mahamudra should not be practiced. Because a lot of heat is generated by the practice of Mahamudra. If someone is suffering from high blood pressure or heart disease then should not be practicing Mahamudra.
